Zach Hallock holds a BA from UCLA, a Masters in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago, and a PhD in Greek and Roman History from the University of Michigan. His favorite areas of research concern the middle Roman Republic, specifically the political and social mechanics of the nascent empire as its constitution adapts to expansion and incorporated populations. This dynamic was at the core of his doctoral work, which analyzed the effects of emerging socio-economic tension and expanding military commitment on archival recordkeeping and historical reliability in the 4^th century BCE. His current projects include an analysis of the legal and political role of the early-to-mid Republican Senate and a historiographic reanalysis of 19^th century German historians and their prominence in our modern assumptions about the reliability of the early Roman historical record.

Dr Hallock has taught a wide range of courses throughout Classics at both the Universities of Michigan and St Andrews in Scotland, including Greek civilization and philosophy, Greek and Roman history, ancient sport and warfare, classical and comparative literature, historiography, as well as Greek and Latin. He will continue his instruction in Latin at Dartmouth College in the 26-27 academic year.

In the classroom, Dr Hallock likes to approach and present the ancient world like the best version of science fiction: the study of human action and choice in a foreign and fantastical setting. In finding meaningful connections with people from cultures so fundamentally different from ours, we can approach a better understanding of the human experience.
