Greek and Roman poets from Homer to Horace employ idealized landscapes as symbols of tranquility, safety, divine inspiration, and removal from the chaos of life. This language seminar explores the emotional impact of this ‘happy place’ and its inverse, the ‘dreadful place’, through selections from a broad range of lyric, bucolic, epic, and erotic poetry.
