Benefactors’ Lecture “Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls,” April 6th 2026

For the annual Benefactors' Lecture on April 6th 2026. Guest speaker Jodi Magness spoke on "Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls", the subject of her award-winning book.

In 1946-1947, the first Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered by accident near the site of Qumran. Eventually the remains of approximately 1000 scrolls were found in 11 caves surrounding Qumran.  Prof Magness gave an in depth examination of the meaning and significance of the scrolls, which were deposited in the caves by members of a Jewish sect who lived at Qumran.

Jodi Magness (www.JodiMagness.org) is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.  Since 2002, she has been the Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
